You can join as a CORPORATE member, if you:

  • Are serving, or have served, with the UK Armed Forces or one of its Reserves, or a subsumed force - e.g. ROC, PMRAFNS etc
  • Are, or have been, a civilian employed by the Ministry of Defence.
  • Are presently an Officer, Instructor or Cadet in one of the Cadet Training Corps of the UK Armed Forces or the Combined Cadet Force

Subject to RAFARS Council approval, you may join as an Associate Member:

  • If you: Are, or have been, connected with a Commonwealth, NATO or Allied Air Force, in either a serving or Civilian capacity
  • Are, interested in the RAF and military aviation, and wish to assist the Society to achieve its published aims

Who are we?

The Royal Air Force Amateur Radio Society (RAFARS) is the data controller for the personal information you provide to us.

What information we collect and why

We collect and store your personal details — such as your name, callsign, address, email, and telephone number — to manage your RAFARS membership and communicate with you about Society matters.

If you give your consent, we may also publish your details in the RAFARS Call Book (QRZ), which is distributed to members only.

Our lawful bases for processing your personal data are:

  • Contract – to administer and manage your membership.
  • Consent – for publication in the RAFARS Call Book.
  • Legitimate interest – to send information about Society events, activities, and news relevant to members.

Data sharing and storage

Your personal information is stored securely on password-protected systems accessible only to authorised RAFARS officers and committee members who need it to perform their roles.

We will never share or sell your data to any other group, organisation, or third party without your explicit consent, unless required by law.

Data retention

We retain your personal information while you remain a member of RAFARS, and for a period afterwards to allow you to rejoin and retain your original membership number.

Basic membership information (such as your name, callsign, and membership number) may be retained indefinitely for historical and record-keeping purposes that are in the legitimate interests of RAFARS.

All other personal information will be securely deleted when it is no longer required for administrative or historical purposes.

Your rights

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), you have the right to:

  • Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Ask us to correct or delete your information.
  • Object to or restrict how we process your data.
  • Withdraw consent for inclusion in the RAFARS Call Book at any time.
